Mari Matsuda of Georgetown University, the first tenured female Asian American law professor in the United States, is the keynote speaker for a day of activities addressing the relationship and status of liberal arts and critical thinking. Women of Color & Allies Summit

The Southwest Region of the National Organization for Women is proud to host The Women of Color and Allies Summit. This coalition of California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah NOW is joining together to acknowledge and discuss critical issues that affect women of all colors and their social environments.

The WOCA Summit includes speakers, panels, workshops and a World Café Conversation. Guests will join with hosts and presenters in discussions to deepen understanding between all people of all colors and economic circumstances with a focus on social, political, economic, health, reproductive justice and equality. We hope that this afternoon of community will address issues of difference, discover common ground and result in an informed agenda of working together to further the cause of equality for women, men and families in our region, states and local communities.

Inga Muscio is the author of Autobiography of a Blue-Eyed Devil: My Life and
Times in a Racist, Imperialist Society and Cunt: A Declaration of Independence.

Muscio is an internationally recognized author and public speaker on the topics of feminism, environmentalism,
anti-racism, queer and trans politics — and how these are all intricately connected. Muscio also addresses how
cultural violence is related to racial,  sexual and family violence.

She is most recently an invited speaker at the 2007 Festival of Women Arts in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Muscio has
also appeared at Dartmouth, New Mexico State University, Drake University, Western Michigan University,
and other venues.

F-Word Discussion on 10/09/07

Hello FORCEers!

I just wanted to confirm with everyone that this Tuesday, October 9th we will be having an F-Word discussion!

"F-Word" is a facilitated discussion addressing issues surrounding feminism. We will be de-bunking myths about what a feminist is, what we talk about, what we want, ext. The current president of the Long Beach chapter of NOW (National Organization for Women), Yvonne Moore, has agreed to facilitate this discussion and I anticipate it to be very exciting.

One of the purposes of this event is to have it be in a public environment. We will be having the discussion on the grass in the Fine Arts Quad. There will be posted signs around the location with quotes, images, questions, ext to perk interest of students walking by so that they may want to sit down and join the conversation. As you all know, feminists have gotten a bad wrap on this campus due to the imagination of The Union, so this is one way to spread truth.
